Paul’s long-time love of movies began when he spent his daily lunchtime researching old musicals in the Hollywood archives. He became especially intrigued with any files pertaining to the Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire musicals. One day, the archives manager asked if Paul would like to go with him to see Ginger as he had some business to do with her.

This casual introduction and meeting with Ginger Rogers became a very close, long-term friendship. Paul traveled with Ginger while she starred in Anything Goes and was a historical consultant for her book. While on tour, Paul said, “I joined her in D.C. and told her, ‘You know, if there’s anyone’s life which should be made into a musical, it’s yours.'” She said, “Write it, darling.” The two of them wanted to include the conversations, the arguments, the good times, the bad times to make them real. Ginger was often infuriated by how some journalists would misquote her, so reading the first draft to her at her ranch in Oregon was quite a challenge for Paul. But afterward, she said, “Well, darling, I guess it’s a go.”
