Synopsis

Finest in the world. Grown in the backyard.

Big Jim Stonehurst, a lifelong resident of Humboldt, manages his large grow by alternately charming and intimidating his loyal farmhands. His older brother, Beeker, is a recently returned war hero who doesn’t talk much, but grows some of the world’s finest marijuana. Together, they could reign as kingpins for a generation.

The brothers routinely skirt the patrol of the longtime sheriff—Ted Fitch—who recognizes he can’t stop every pot farmer in Humboldt, and so monitors the industry like a gardener prunes a tree. But Fitch and the brothers’ game of cat-and-mouse intensifies when the DEA sends in their top dog, Special Agent Jan Cutler, who is hellbent on eradicating Humboldt’s signature plant, starting with the Stonehurst Family Farm.

Complicating things further is the return of Big Jim’s ex-fiancée, Katherine Dally, who shows up seven-months pregnant and on the lam after killing her baby’s father. Still heartbroken because she left, Big Jim wants to kick her out, but Beeker refuses to send a woman in her condition away. So, Katherine stays.

The next day, the Stonehursts brush up against the law when they witness a harmless local stoner, Bud, get beaten bloody by the DEA for smoking a joint. After a stare down with Special Agent Cutler, the brothers attempt to batten down the hatches of their operation. But they fail to realize that the woman they agreed to help, Katherine, is a DEA informant whose only chance of staying out of prison is helping Cutler send the brothers there instead.

As their hidden greenhouse full of 300 plants nears harvest, Beeker and Big Jim must maintain their healthy crop, fend off the law and find a new way to sell their product. Meanwhile, Cutler needs a big bust, as she suspects her career may have been sidetracked to Humboldt after announcing her same-sex relationship with Rachel McBride.

As the Stonehurst brothers and Cutler escalate their moves against each other, Sheriff Fitch and Katherine will have to choose a side in this highly localized and personalized examination of the War on Drugs.
